Driving Project Management Innovation: A Case Study On Integrating Pmbok, Scrum and Backplanning In Construction

This paper presents a case study of implementing a hybrid project management model integrating PMBOK, Scrum, and Backplanning within the Information Systems Department of a leading Portuguese construction company. This study, conducted during an eight-month internship, aimed to strengthen project management practices by integrating predictive and agile methodologies within a complex, people-centered environment. A sprint planning and monitoring framework was developed to promote transparency, fairness, and accountability, complemented by a structured reinforcement of Scrum ceremonies aligned with a Backplanning mindset, a reverse-planning logic inspired by PMBOK principles. Beyond technical enhancements, the intervention drove cultural transformation, fostering collaboration and shared responsibility. The paper contends that hybrid models can serve as catalysts for organizational maturity and continuous learning in traditionally conserva-tive industries.
